Reverse Painting
Reverse painting is an application of oil
paint on one side of a clear panel. The artwork is intended to be
viewed from the unpainted side. This technique is difficult and
requires extensive planning for the composition to turn out
perfectly. Reverse painting offers the pure color and texture.
Smaller works are sometimes painted on glass while larger works are
painted on acrylic panels (Plexiglas), because of weight
considerations. Glass is easily cleaned and requires only the usual
care. Acrylic panels are sturdy, but should never be scratched and
never cleaned with commercial glass cleaner. Reverse paintings are
exciting and unique works of art. They are intended to be permanent
and with proper care will last many lifetimes.
